  plants about 15-20cm: this stunning vine can be enjoyed as an edible house plant, I had mine growing about my kitchen ceiling for years 😃 it now has its place in my heated greenhouse. A truly beautiful hearty plant and tasty too, big fleshy leaves and purple stems tiny white flowers and glistening purple seeds. she also looks great in a medium to large terrarium.

  Basella (Basella alba) is a tropical perennial climbing vine, it requires a minimum temperature of 15°C or even 20°C to develop properly. It will survive nicely indoors as a house plant, or winter in a heated greenhouse as long as temperatures are above 15°C. Indeed, the south of India where it comes from offers the ideal climate for it. China adopted it before making it known to Europe. Known by various names such as Malabar spinach, Ceylon spinach, Chinese spinach, Angola brede or gandole brede, the baselle can reach 2m in height with fleshy twining stems on which embossed, oval, fleshy leaves grow about fifteen centimeters. In summer, axillary spikes formed of small, tight, white to slightly pink flowers appear before giving way to small dark red/purple fruits resembling peas which are used a stunning violet dye in fabrics and used as food coloring. These are the leaves and young shoots that are harvested and consumed like spinach (Spinacia oleracea) with a delicately tangy flavor closer to sorrel (Rumex acetosa). Low in calories (30kcal/100g), basella provides potassium, it is rich in vitamins C and A.
