  Shoots are 3–8 cm tall, green or very often reddish, becoming dark red or almost black below.
  The broad leaves are 4–4.5 mm long, have a differentiated border of narrow cells and lack teeth.
  The leaf tip narrows abruptly to a small but distinct point and the nerve runs to the leaf tip.
  Dark rhizoids cover the lower part of the red stem. Capsules are rare.
  
  Found in calcareous marshes, springs and fens.
